About Tom Sawyer:

  • Native Wichitan- Born in St Joseph's Hospital in south Wichita.  
  • Small Business Owner, 62 years old, Democrat
  • Wichita State Graduate: Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting, cum laude 1984
  • Experienced:
  • Previously served as our State Representative from the 95th house district, first serving from 1987 to 1998. During that time he served in many leadership positions and earned a reputation of working across party lines to solve problems and to improve the lives of Kansas families. He stepped down in 1998 to run for Governor.
  • In 2002 Tom was re-elected to represent us in the Kansas House of Representatives serving until September 2009 when he was appointed by Governor Parkinson to serve on the Kansas Parole Board. 
  • He decided to run for State Representative again in 2012 because he was sick and tired of watching our legislature bicker and fight and fail to get things done. When they passed a budget and a reckless tax plan that will leave our state millions of dollars in debt, he had enough and decided he needed to do something about it. 
  • Tom Sawyer currently serves as the House Minority Leader and on the State Finance Council and Legislative Coordinating Council. 
  • Since returning to the Legislature in 2013 Tom Sawyer has served on the following legislative committees:
    • House Tax Committee (Ranking Member)
    • House Elections & Ethics Committee (Ranking Member) 
    • House Rules and Journal Committee, Vice-chair
    • The Kansas Sentencing Commission
    • Special Committee on Ethics, Elections and Local Government
    • Council of State Governments Governing Board
    • Governor's Task Force on Tax Reform
  • Former House Majority Leader (1991-1992), The first Wichitan selected since 1969.
  • Former House Minority Party Leader (1993-1998)
  • Sedgwick County Legislative Delegation Chair (2005-06)
  • Democratic Party Nominee for Governor in 1998
  • Elected in 1999 and re-elected in 2001 to serve as State Chairman of his party
  • Active in our community.  Volunteering for many groups including Habitat for Humanity and the 20 mile CROP walk.
  • Member of the Search Committee that chose the new President for Wichita State University in 2012
  • Member of the Visioneering Wichita Committee Task Force 2004
  • Former member of the United Methodist Urban Ministries Board of Directors
  • Former member of the American Diabetes Association Legislative Committee (1992-1993)
  • Citizen Participation Organization Council Member (1979-1987), C.P.O. Coordinating Board President, 1982
  • City of Wichita Human Resources Board , 2nd Vice chair 1980-81
  • Former Sedgwick County Official:
    • Sedgwick County Clerk 1984-1985
    • Chief Deputy County Clerk 1979-1984
  • Named an Outstanding Young American 1982
  • Member of West Side United Methodist Church
    • Church Council Chair 2002
    • Youth Group Sponsor 1999-2005
