NO STATE INCOME TAX ON SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS:

One of the groups hit the hardest with property taxes are seniors living on a fixed income. While we were only able to provide them with a $70 additional property tax cut, we did something else that will help them a lot. We totally eliminated the state income tax on all Social Security Benefits.   The chart below shows how significant this tax cut can be. For Example, a married couple with total household income of $75,000 or more that receives $50,000 a year in Social Security would receive a $2422.50 tax cut just from the Social Security exemption.  That is on top of the $70 property tax cut and the income tax cut that would apply to their non-social security income.

This cut should help a lot of Kansas seniors pay their property taxes and be able to stay in their homes.

INCOME TAX CUTS FOR ALL KANSANS- Biggest percentage cuts for lower income taxpayers.

SB 1, the bi-partisan tax cut bill passed during the 2024 Special Session also provides income tax cuts for all Kansans. The biggest percentage tax cuts are for those making less than $75,000.  For example a married couple making $30,000  would get a 67% tax cut.  Married couples making less than $26, 560 will no longer owe any Kansas Income Taxes. the chart below shows the tax cut at various income levels.

The chart below it shows the tax cuts for Single taxpayers.

The main provisions of this tax cut include raising the Standard deduction for everyone. And it changes the Kansas tax rates from the current  three brackets of 3.1%, 5.25% and 5.7% to a two bracket system of 5.2% and 5.58%. But for most taxpayers the biggest tax cut comes from the huge increase in the personal Exemption provided by the bill. For Single Taxpayers the personal exemption is raised from $2,250 to $9, 160.  For Married taxpayers their personal exemption is raised from $4,500 to $18, 320. That is why this tax bill provides the biggest relief for lower income taxpayers and eliminates income tax completely for many Kansans.
